7 Important Ways to Prepare for a Winter Storm

Anyone who was in Atlanta in 2014, or knows someone who was in Atlanta in 2014 remembers the ice storm that overtook the entire city one frigidly cold January afternoon. The southern city was completely unprepared for the events of that day, which led to 24-hour gridlock on some highways and extra cold homes. In an effort to prevent this from ever happening again, the state government takes great precaution whenever there’s a slight threat of inclement winter weather. Although Sunrise Builder’s McDonough and Union City homes are built to protect you and your family during all months of the year, it’s not a bad idea to prepare for the worst.

We’ve done the research this blistery cold winter and have found these 7 tips to be the best in keeping you prepared and warm this season:

  1. We’ve touched on winterizing your home for the season and we can’t stress this enough. Winterizing your home is step one to being prepared for the chilly winter nights we can expect this year.
  2. Put together a preparedness kit. In the event something happens like an abrupt ice storm or a blizzard happens again (it’s really not that out of character for the south if you think about it). Your kit should include at least three gallons of water, three days of food, a flashlight, warm clothes and blankets, extra batteries, phone chargers, just to name a few. Creating this kit now might save you down the road.
  3. Know the terms. Knowing what different warnings mean can help save a lot of time and stress. The big three are Winter Weather Advisory (winter conditions are expected to be inconvenient, non-life-threatening), Winter Storm Watch (a winter storm is possible in your area), and Winter Storm Warning (a winter storm is occurring or will soon occur in your area). By knowing the terminology, you can adjust your plans and prepare accordingly.
  4. Change your plans to stay indoors. If you have plans to brave the icy streets, unless it’s an emergency, it’d be advisable to reschedule your plans. If you must drive, be sure to bring an emergency kit with you.
  5. Stay dry. If you must go out in the snow/ice, make sure to keep your socks and clothing dry. For instance, if you’re shoveling snow for a prolonged period, take a break and put on warm, dry clothes before continuing on.
  6. Don’t drive. This one can’t be stressed enough. The ice storm of 2014 was the greatest indicator of why no one should take a winter storm warning lightly. However, if you need to drive, never go at night, take someone with you, and let others know your schedule.
  7. Get cozy. Make sure you have enough food to last you through the storm, and enough firewood to heat your home should the electricity go out. Maybe invest in a few candles for the same. Use the storm as an excuse to veg out and be cozy inside your beautiful home!

If Georgia is in for a repeat of the blizzard of 1993 or the ice storm of 2015, then the best we can do is make sure our homes are prepared for the storm ahead. There are plenty of ways to go about doing so, so be sure to consult with FEMA or any other emergency weather service if a storm is imminent in your area. And remember, stay cozy and dry in your warm Sunrise home.
