7 Tips to Enjoy the Holidays in Your New Home

7 Tips to Enjoy the Holidays in Your New Home

Moving into a new home this season? Establishing a new home is always exciting, but can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. It may feel like you’re surrounded by boxes and only have time for unpacking, but we’ve got a few tips to make your new house feel like home this year.

Enjoy the Historic Charm of a Beautiful Downtown

Nothing says holiday spirit like strolling downtown past decorated shops and restaurants. Christmas on the Square in downtown Covington is filled with activities. Children can meet and get a photo with Santa, and the whole family can cheer on the Christmas Parade, and then end the night with a party! Or find a romantic getaway with a candlelit carriage ride.

Decorating for the Holidays

Over the years, everything will find a place in your new home, and the same can be said for your holiday decorations. Maybe the tree doesn’t seem quite right in the living room, but glitters and glows perfectly in the kitchen. Stockings might not always hang above the fireplace: perhaps they fit better along the banister. Your holiday decorations can evolve as you build traditions and memories, and find joy in your new home.

Installing Window Treatments

With decorations all aglow, it’s important to also keep your home cozy and warm during the winter. As Jack Frost tries to move into town, try insulating curtains to add beautiful accents to your windows and keep your heat working efficiently. You’ll love these just as much when temperatures warm up as they help save money on running your AC in the summer.

Apple Spice and Everything Nice

Helping it to look beautiful is just part of the charm of setting up a new home. Your house should also smell like home, and nothing beats the deliciously warm scent of apple spice for the holidays. This recipe can help you fill the whole house with a wonderful, natural fragrance before an open house, holiday party or cookie swap. Here’s what you’ll need:

Apple Spice Scent Recipe

2-3 thinly sliced apples (we like red delicious)

3-4 cinnamon sticks

2-3 star anise seeds

3 cloves

2-3 slices of fresh ginger

1 tablespoon of ground nutmeg

Water

Add ingredients and enough water to cover them completely to a saucepan on the back burner of your stove. Bring water to a simmer on the lowest setting and stir occasionally for 30 minutes, or until the apple slices become translucent. Enjoy!

If you want to preserve the liquid to reuse, strain the solids out for storage in a sealed container or dropper bottle. To diffuse the holiday spirit, carefully add a few drops on top of the firewood in your fireplace (before lighting it!) or outdoor fire pit (again, before lighting the fire) for a warm, toasty spice-scented evening.

Gingerbread House Time

Engage the whole family in a fun activity away from digital screens by assembling a pre-made gingerbread house. Use classic holiday flavors like candy canes and gumdrops, or add surprises like Swedish fish or popping candy. Whatever the sugary add-ons, this construction process is a fun and festive way to get the whole family to the kitchen and into the sweet fun!

Meet the Neighbors

Neighborhoods throughout metro Atlanta are famous for their delightful light shows. Take time this season to take in the sights and decorations – and meet your new neighbors. Headed over for a neighborhood ornament exchange or housewarming party? You can make a great first impression on your host or hostess with a small gift. Feeling crafty? Enjoy a Family Meal

This holiday season, remember to cherish your loved ones. A surefire way to warm their hearts – and your new home – is to make your favorite holiday foods for all to enjoy. The best memories are often made cooking together in the kitchen and sitting down around the dinner table. Take time to unplug and unwind (and unfasten that belt to make room for a delightful feast) through meals with the people you love most.
